I used to own a tank full of Tropical Fish, one in particular was a Female Fighter, everytime I checked on them, she was never to be found, so I'd open the tank lid and there she was laying on top of the Filtre, out of the water! So I'd flick her back in, and then a few minutes later she'd be there again, so I used to watch her and she seemed fine, why did she do this? did she have a brain? maybe she was a human in a previous life?

Probably just trying to get a bit more air! From About.com:

"Even though Bettas do well in waters low in dissolved oxygen, that does not mean they require less oxygen than other fish. Bettas have a special respiratory organ that allows them to breath air directly from the surface. In fact they inherently must do so. In experiments where the labyrinth organ was removed, the fish died from suffocation even though the water was saturated with oxygen. For this reason, Bettas must have access to the water surface to breath air directly from the atmosphere."

Hope this answers your question. Of course, if it suddenly sprouts legs -- do let me know!!

you should have made a small cave for it, the fighters like really small places to hide in, try using a lid from a baby's bottle or something of that sort of size. the fighter will generally stay sheltered in there until it wants some food.
