I live in section 8 housing and my building complex is always changing management companies, twice so far, and the new manager was going thru tennant rent history and calls me and says that back in 6/2004 my rent was 8.00 but that I had only made the money order for 3.87. I wasn't workin at the time, now almost three years later, the new manger tells me I owe late fees and the difference from those 8.00. I told her could she please send me a copy of that money order because the one for May and June 2004 were stolen along with my purse back then. She said she doesn't keep copies... If all she has is a print out, how do I know someone before her didn't make a human error and punch in what they thought was 3.87? Am I supposed to pay that money from almost three years ago if she can't provide me with an authentic copy of that money order, and also they don't provide me with a copy of anything when they recieve my rent! They claim my money order receipt is proof, but its not their proof!

Yes only $8.00 not $800.00 it's low income and I wasn't working at the time. And they are charging me late fees and the difference from almost three years ago! Help!

I can't use checks because that is how they have it set up, we make the money orders at the designated currency exchange and the manager picks them up there.

I woldn';t pay it.

You should 've kept a copy of the Money Order yourself.

You should also use checks just for this purpose. The bank would be able to show records of payment.

If they want it, they will have to prove it in court. I wouldn;t pay. Like you said, if they only have what someoen wrote down in a book, that won;t hold up in court. If they want to evect you over it, they would also have to go to court and prove that you didn;t pay and they are screwed either way. They have no case whatso ever

Are you saying $8.00? If so then it's probably not worth it going on your credit if she is correct. If it's more and I'm just misunderstanding your questions than they need to send you proof of this error. A collection company will say the same thing, they will not collect without proof that you owe it.

pay it. It will cost you more to fight it in court than the the interest on the money.
