Depends on what you want to spend and what type of bike you want, sports, tourer, cruiser, etc!
If pushed I would have the following bikes in the following order.
Honda VTX 1800 (cruiser)
Honda Fireblade (supersports)
Yamaha R1 (supersports)

Depends on your use, for all round use I don't think you can beat the Pan European. It won't compete with the CBRs etc on performance, but it's no slouch either. The riding position is super comfy for commuting, it was built for long distance touring so the pillion will be happy as well. Panniers are supplied as standard. All the emergency services use Pans, they are reliable although they tend to be wear out front tyres quicker than the rears. If you can't afford a Pan, have a look at the Honda Deauvile, same qualities but a 650cc V twin as opposed to a 1100 or 1300 V4 in the Pan.

that depends on your finances, riding exp.and what you want ,you need to take into account what your wife feels comfortable with as well many bikes dont supply great passenger comfort.i wouldent go with anything under a 750 as you want enough power to control the traffic, you want to be able to get out of the way of pinheads that dont respect motorcycles.the best thing to do is spend a day riding to several different dealers and try a few on...with your passenger so you can try them out and get just what you need!!try a bunch out have some fun with it dont let them talk you into something you dont need or want.

The Softails set under the HDs different than the Sportys. A Fatboy would be an extremely solid decision as would most of the Softails. The seat heights variety from 24 to 26 inches. countless the Dynas are related to the same.

Pan European. Outstanding bike, will take you (and the mrs) in comfort wherever you want to go. bulletproof engine, comfy ride, and the fact its a honda means it will run forever on about 5p maintainance a year.
Just a bloody brilliant bike.

1200 Bandit,
Brillaint allrounder,
You can get an early example for arond the 2K mark now, well worth it. I covered 26,000 miles on mine and it was trouble free and was a joy to own.
