Why is it that Doctors can't except the fact that they are Human Beings, and that they are not Perfect, that they can make Mistakes. and own up to those Mistakes?

Thank you Shayna! :)

We can own up to our mistakes. We know we are human.

We never like to because when we make mistakes dealing with the health care of our patients, usually a mistake is a VERY bad thing. Sometimes it doesn't matter much. Sometimes it could be disasterous.

The first thing we generally do is report the mistake to one of our colleagues (or our supervisor or senior doctor if we are juniors or trainees). Sometimes this is a call for help - when things are very bad! Usually the most important action is to straight away rectify the situation so no harm comes to the patient.

Many mistakes are small and are immediately picked up by the staff around us. For instance an error in writing a drug (dose or route or frequency or whatever) can be found usually instantly by one of our astute nursing staff checking before administering it ... or perhaps when the medication is to be provided by pharmacy the pharmacists would call and double check.

When mistakes are big and involve loss of human life, we make a big deal of it and investigate it thoroughly. System wide faults are addressed and rectified wherever possible. Faults on a personal level are also addressed.

I'm sorry that you feel this way about doctors. I guess you must have dealt with some who don't have a nice manner or who were not very communicative and I think you must have felt frustrated. Not all doctors are like that. We would like to think of ourselves as approachable.

That is a general statement. Doctors know they are human. They are working with human life not with light bulbs, cars, brooms, canned goods etc. You get the point. This means they had better be very knowledgeable and skillful. They need to be accurate and careful. They need to make few to no mistakes. They are human and error can occur. Doctors do take responsibility for errors when they occur. There are investigations and obligations that occur when a Doctor makes a mistake. It is never ignored. Many times it is not everyones business due to many factors. There are privacy acts and other reasons. If a factory worker drops a case of light bulbs and breaks them, no life is lost. Still the workers actions will be addressed within the factory. The same thing occurs with Doctors. The mistake will be addressed within the facility and chain of command. Depending on how the outcome of the error is, the consequences are in accordance. Walk a mile before you accuse. Doctors give their lives to save lifes. Lets not crucify them for that. He who is perfect slam doctors now!

You must have had a bad experience with some doctors, which is very unfortunate, but their are many doctors who care about their patients and own up to their mistakes when they make them.
I suppose some doctors get the "God" complex and think they are right and can 'cure' everyone which obviously isn't the case. You should definately get second opinions whenever you can and try to find a trustworthy physician, maybe recommended by a friend or relative. Getting a good doctor who is honest is like anything else you shop for, you've got to look around and research. Good luck with this~

those mistakes are life threatening...if a doctor were to admit fault they could have their license pulled, can you imagine a family found out the reason why their son died was because of a mix up, do you think they would say "oh well, he's only human, we'll let this one slide." ? Doctors will admit to their mistakes when life no longer has meaning to anyone.

not all doctors are like that. The best doctors make mistakes know they've made mistakes and admitt the mistake they have made and they learn from their mistake.
