Assuming that these stories were yours and that you now wish to change them, you have the right to do so; however, significant changes would make it advisable to obtain a new copyright registration on the altered material.

Of course, if you are not the author of the stories you wish to re-write, then doing so would violate the author's copyright and make you liable to being sued. Despite what some ignorant respondents wrote, it would do you no good to change character names, etc., if the basic plot, etc., remain the same. It would still be infringement.

By rewrite, I'm assuming you mean a different version of the same story. Basically, all you have to do is make your version sufficiently distinct from the original. You can do this by reorganizing or telling the story in a different method, parodying, creating a commentary on the original or even just adding to the original story is enough to make your piece distinct.

1. Ask permission from original author or copyright holder.
2. Make sure of the legalities
3. Right it the way it is.
4. Make sure you want to go through that process.
5. After you have satisified the above rules make sure you have the time and money to devote to doing that.

Only if it's a spoof or parody, I think. Otherwise -- not-a-chance. You can't even use another's character!
