My best friend does this and I just can't understand. She says since she is eating right and taking care of herself in other ways that everything should be alright. She is a very smart person so I don't get it. Smoking during pregnancy causes a wide range of problems. Ranging from infant death to learning disabilities in children. Why would she do that to her baby if she knew she could prevent it? I'm having trouble getting past it when I'm around her. I have told her how I feel and showed her why. There are a million websites related to the problems and she still smokes 13 cigarettes a day. She says she cut back from a pack so that's good enough. Don't get it. Help???!!!???

elizabeth I am not calling her names! Holy smokes! That is terrible! I'm looking for a way to get past how horrible it makes me feel for what she is doing to her baby. I love her very much and am very worried about what smoking might mean for her unborn child.

I was a smoker for 10 years. I just quit about 2 and a half years ago. I smoked through my entire pregnancy with my daughter. Now, while some women continue to smoke through their pregnancy and end up with completely healthy babies, that was not exactly the case for me. My daughter was born very small and it was a dry birth (emergency c-section). She was 4lbs and spent a week in the NICU. I don't know if the smoking completely contributed to the low birth weight because I was also on paxil at the time of my pregnancy which the doctor said was fine. After I had my daughter all of the reports started to surface about how paxil wasn't safe for pregnancy. I believe that the smoking had a lot to do with the condition that my daughter was born in. That is why I decided to quit before I got pregnant with my second daughter. I couldn't put another baby through that. I don't look down on anyone who smokes while they are pregnant. It is their choice and who am I to judge. We all make choices in our life that affect other people. Sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way. It doesn't make you a bad person.

The reason people (women) as you are asking, smoke, during pregnancy in your case is caused by the niccotine in the cigarettes. The niccotine in the cigarettes obviously causes an addiction just as herion and other drugs do. Your body then becomes reliant on teh substance after a long period of time. Hence, why niccotine patches must be used, plus will power.

She is addicted to the nicotine, and for someone who i'm sure doesn't and probably never has smoked, this is hard for her. Now, i dont' understand her need to continue to do it. I mean, i have smoked but if i were pregnant, i would stop smoking, definetly. Everyone has a different way of dealing with their addictions. Hopefully the baby will be fine though. I don't think there is much you can do. you have told her how you felt, and she doesnt' seem to care. Just let her learn on her own. It's sad that an innocent child may suffer, but all you can do is try and that 's seems to not be working. Continue to call her names and tell her how dumb she is, maybe she will get tired of hearing you and stop to appease you.

There is only so much that you can do in a situation like this... I am with you in that I don't understand it at all. But I know plenty of people who did this during their pregnacy. I think the common denominator is simply that they don't think it will happen to their baby. It is so silly, to be able to prevent something like that and do nothing about it. I would suggest letting her know how it makes you feel and showing her all the information that suggests against smoking while you are pregnant. After that...I would say their is really nothing that you can do.

I myself, smoked throughout 2 pregnancies. My mother smoked while pregnant with me and I turned out quite healthy. I think it's easy to assume that smoking during pregnancy won't effect you, or your baby, when you see so many smokers regularly giving birth to healthy babies. Unfortunately, it's one of the hardest habits to break.

Give her a thumbs up on the cut back. Maybe with your praise & support she'll do even better.

Good luck!

You probably dont smoke and that is why you dont understand. Cigarette addiction is the #1 most difficult addiction to beat. Even more so that heroin. The problem is this country has not come up with ways to help smokers. They can if they want to. They have programs for heroin addicts but nothing more than the stupid patch for smokers. She cant help it. She's addicted. And although its not right there are plenty of babies born to smokers with no problems. So maybe this can in some way show non-smokers just how addictive the cigarettes are.

My b/f doctor told her to smoke during her pregnancies because she was so stressed out and trying to quit would've just added to the stress which is even worse for the baby. It is a risk, true, but all three of her kids are perfectly fine (oldest 18, youngest 14)

It's called addiction. Sometimes its not so easy for people to quit. Others can quit cold turkey. Giving her a hard time will not help and probably only annoy her.

Think about it, if there was something that you enjoyed and were told by your friend everytime you did it, you would be annoyed too.

Your friend is addicted. To her, maybe unconciously, it's more important to have that cigarette than for her unborn baby risk suffering some kind of disease/defect that may affect the poor human for his/her entire life. That's an extremely selfish thing to do and very, very sad that she's willing to put another human in harm's way for her daily "fix".
