Actually it is a very well researched topic.
Many animal behaviorists...(drum roll please) believe the Kia Parrot is the smartest of all beasts. The reason why animal behaviorists believe this is because the Kia parrot show superior problem solving ability compared to other animals.
However, many scientists believe that it is actually the Dolphin as Dolphin have a well developed cortex that allows them to ancitipate complex outcomes and plan accordingly. The ability to plan and strategize to them is the most important component of intelligence.
Lastly of course are Apes. Again, scientists differ here. While it is easier to study the intelligence of say Chimpanzees, because they are more extroverted, Gorillas are the ones that have the focus that it takes to excel in sign language. Orangotans seem to veer to either extremes.
In short, since there is no unanimous opinion on what constitutes intelligence in a non-human, it will always be debated. But by and large, the Kia Parrot is considered by most people in the animal/scientific community to be the most intelligent, at least these days. In the late 1990s and early 2000's it was the Dolphin. Next decade..? Who knows.

As pets go, I would say that I had a blast training my rat! What a trip those little critters are! If you had food, all you have to do is show him what you wanted and give him the food. He would come when he was called, walk on a leash and do stupid pet tricks. I found it easier to train him then most dogs.
As to animals in the wild I would go with the bottle nose dolphin or the sperm whale (which has the largest brain mass in the world). Bottle nose dolphins have complex communication and problem solving skills. Sperm whales are the same.
Good Luck and Take Care

Elephants are very intelligent. Dolphins are also very smart.
They say a dog can learn up to 200 some odd words and commands, which is equivalent to a 3-4 year old child.

Rats are very smart. Can be trained to do more than any dog can do - and are very sociable. Sapiens are pretty bright, too!
