NEEDED?…no. I lived in the Dominican Republic with very irregular electrical service. We had a fridge…but without electricity it was of little use. We learned to buy dry storage food (beans and rice) and the right amount of meat daily for our meals.
It is much more convenient to have a refrigerator, though. I like storing leftovers and eating them for lunch the next day.

I suppose it is not a necessity, but it is a lifesaver if you choose to eat parishable items. Mostly we use the cold to preserve food longer.
