Why and when was it invented? I mean, most clothing was invented to serve a purpose, ex.-belts were invented to hold up your pants. So what purpose does a necktie serve really?

It was invented during the French Revolution, when they were all guillotine happy. It purpose was for burials, it was used to keep the head from rolling around. People thought it looked so good on the corpses, that many dandies started to wear them. True story.

I don't but I would gladly strangle them. I think back in the old days they wore a bib like thing at their throat it was used as a napkin, I believe the tie evolved from that.

Neck ties were used in the middle ages to tie shirt collars, as they did not have buttons. The shirts had made like t-shirts, with large neck/head openings with collars. Since Dye was also expensive, most shirts were white or off white. The ties were like colored sashes to decorate & add color the attire.
