Most people are poor due to laziness and the poor choices they made. Others, it is just bad luck, but as a whole it is not helping a poor person to get out of their current situation. There are too many people taking advantage of the Welfare system. Why should honest working Americans pay for all of their kids, $150 pair of Nike's, and drug and alcohol habits?

my friend is a HUD housing inspector - the $150 pair of Nike's is not a drop in the bucket of the waste....but then the welfare people are just what our government as made them because of lack of accountability!

I think there needs to be some sort of organization (public or private) for those who genuinely fall on hard times -for example, someones home burns down, a mother who leaves an abusive husband or vise versa. However, all we have done with the current welfare system is create a cycle of slavery via dependence.
It's easy for me to say from the outside looking in, though. I'll freely admit I am joining the soap box and have no productive solutions so I'll shut up now :D

Not all at once, but they should work on it. Old Bill was supposed to have overhauled the welfare system. The welfare system should stay in place to help people that really need help and are not in their position because of their own doing or the old that can't work. Some of the handouts should be limited so the people that are able to work can take steps to improve their situation.

Not completely abolish it because some people truly need the help, but there are people who seriously abuse the system. I have quite a few friends that are on welfare all whom are capable of working and I tell them so. They get pissed because they have kids......well sorry nobody told these people to lay there and spread their legs and get pregnant it is no excuse. I know of another one who had more kids because they could get more assistance that way.....that's intelligent. Or how about another one who uses all her cash assistance to go buy $20 eyeshadow and $30 lipsticks. Why wouldn't they stay on it. I would! Fortunately I am a person who is hard working and feels you should earn your money to buy the nicer things. It is just to bad not all people think that! DO AWAY WITH LAZINESS!!!!!!!
ALso another thing that is really irritating is that people on welfare get help for schooling, college ect. and because I make $20,000.00 a year I can not get any help to better myself. But they can quit school reapply later and still get help. WHy if they quit once they shoulnd't get help from the state again! Just my opinion!!!

DEADBEATS? who're you calling deadbeats? No, the only deadbeats are the deadbeat FATHERS that walked out on their infants, no longer the mothers on welfare. purely simply by fact a confirm is going by somewhat conflict and desires welfare, does no longer recommend they cant take care of their infants or that they are lazy. all people has tough patches exceptionally once you're a single mom. besides welfare demands 32 hours a week of artwork or college. And who says they dont spend it properly. they provide you some hundred funds a month it is in all probability purely adequate to lease a room from somebody and purchase diapers.

Perhaps not abolish it completely but certainly massive reductions are called for.
Unfortunately, some people are mentally retarded or suffering from mental health problems and cannot accept personal responsibility. These people should be provided minimal care at tax payer expense.
The rest of the lazy parasites should be put to work or put in the mentally hadicapped category if they refuse.

I agree. Too many people take advantage and have taken advantges for generations. I believe that if you want something free from the governement than you need to get up and get a job and then where the ends don't meet maybe then you should receive some sort of compensation. Also, you would not be able to quit a job and if you got fired, the reasons should be carefully looked at by the governement in order to reinstate benefits, if it was becasue of alcohol or drugs then your benefits would stop period.

Welfare should be abolished. Let pregnant women live with their own or their boyfriend's family. All welfare should be private charity.

We need to bring back the poor farm. I see people on welfare that have better coverage for health than working folks. Also, families that have generations of benefit leeches should have themselves sterilized to keep them from reproducing more leeches.
