My wife created her own solution to this problem. She disciplined herself to first write down everything she was spending for a month -just to see where it was going. Write it down as you are spending it.
After you get in the habit, break it up into catagories: Food, Entertainment, Auto, Bills, etc. This way you can see how much you have for these different catagories.
To even further break it down, consider withdrawing and dividing your money up into envelopes for those additional expenses.

I walk into a store, decide what to buy and sometimes walk out before buying it. At the very least, walk past the item and then go back to buy it. Many times, I change my mind and don't purchase the item. I apparently didn't need it bad enough.
Also, put money in savings first. Before you pay your bills. Get your checks direct deposited to the bank and have some money moved automatically into savings by the bank on each pay period.

Keep a journal of all things you have to pay and of things you want. Look at what your spending most of your money in, and try to keep your self from doing it.
When I'm at a store and I see something first I ask myself, " can i afford it?" then I ask , "Do I want this?" or "Do I need it?"
If its a want , then I dont get it by telling myself I will come back tomorrow and get it. But tomorrow usually doesnt come because
I am doing something else and then I realize that I didnt really want it or need it. You need to psych yourself.
Peace and Love your way.

use a personal finance manger software. and remember to categories every spending.
So, at the end of the month you will know where all the money goes.
it's difficult to keep track of the spending on monthly or weekly bases try to update your spending daily.
this way will not control your spending instead it will point out where most of your money goes and where you can save.
good luck

Definitely leave your debit card at home. Consolidate all your credit card to one credit card with a no interest due until 2008. I get them in the mail all the time.

Go to a non-profit organization on debt counselling or find a friend to teach you how to budget, there are also a ton of books on budgeting. Buy Quicken or Microsoft Money and use your computer to budget.

learn a little self discipline... set up a budget and stick with it... if you find you're using your debit card too much get rid of it and use a checkbook.. having to record each check may help you identify those splurge impulse buys so you can eliminate them easier...

The first step to managing your money, is to have money to manage.
SAVE MONEY!
Take a little money every now and then and DON'T SPEND IT!
If you do that then you will be ok.
