c] Oscar, typing quickly, finished the essay in time for class

a] As the ball went sailing over the outfield wall, the crowd went wild (I can't say this is wrong, but I wouldn't use the word "as" here. I would say "when the ball . . ."

b] Pens are what I lose most often (I wouldn't use "what" here, but it's not wrong. I would say "Pens are the thing . . .")

Stylistic corrections only.

Sorry but I must disagree with some of you on #1. A is definitely incorrect as the this implies the essay was doing the typing. B is correct but should use something like "By typing quickly,.." to put the emphasis on why he finished on time, while C emphasizes who finished the essay. So, either B or C are correct depending upon the meaning you want to convey.

Everyone agrees that 2 a and 3b are generally correct ineveryday use, but as some pointed out a little clunky and could be improved such as "As the ball sailed..." to make agreement or "Pens are the things that.."

As for the first, any of the three is technically correct although B is the best answer. A is unnecessarily lengthy and C is simply awkward and does not convey the meaning as directly as does B. You split your main point with commas making it have less impact.

In question 2 sentence A is obviously correct unless you intend to say the crowd was sailing over the outfield wall.

In question 3 B shows the correct subject/verb agreement. Are is the plural form of is.

1. A is passive speech. It's correct, but frowned upon. Both B and C are fine depending on what you're trying to stress.

2. Well, I'd say that the crowd didn't go sailing over the outfield wall, so b wouldn't be correct. A looks fine.

3. B. Pens is plural so you need a plural verb.

1 I'd accept any of the three (I'd like a full stop at the end of the sentence please). I like (c) best, then (b). (a) sounds a little awkward with that ?ablative absolute clause in the beginning and the passive voice in the main part of the sentence.

2 (a)

3 (b)

On the other hand, I'm not an English teacher.
