They are a rip off and ilegal. They canot legally go into someones credit files, social security information or job information, or medical information.
Eve though you give your permission the person whom you are researching did not give his or hers.
YOU would be better off to use old fashion leg work. it's mostly paper trails anyway.
contact the census bureau and ask for forms to locat him.have prepaired any information such as social number you have, where he lived in 2000, 1990 ect. if you are seking child support than you can use the state welfare system(child support unit) as they can access work records, income tax information, emplouyment information you never could get close to.

You can find someone legit in your area. Check with local private investigators. Most of them will tell you upfront what their fees are and if you cannot afford them, they may offer you some free advice. If you call all in the area, at least one of them may point you in the right direction. Or you can contact that child support program where they research and find your ex and make him pay child support and I don't think it costs you anything.
