Anything at all by Madeleine L'Engle (I don't know if I spelled her first name right) Her books are amazing fantasies for teenagers, and they are about some really interesting young people. I read them in the 80s, and they seemed current then; re-read one not too long ago, and they STILL seemed current and fresh. If the teenager is a little more mature, I'd recommend Ladies of the Club by Helen Hooven Santmyer; it follows a group of female friends from their graduation through their entire lives. It's really hard to put down once you start! Have fun!

I love the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison. The first one is Angus,Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging.
You might enjoy The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants as well.
Also the S.A.S.S. series is fun. Each book is set in a different country and features an American going abroad to study. My favorite is The Sound of Munich.

Mary Higgins Clark is one of my favorite authors...its allot of suspense...not to mention she has some pretty juicy scenes in her novels as well...if you want to read books about popular people and cliques tho, then you could try the Sweet Vally High series or Sugar N' Spice series.

"the life of pi" - yann martel
"my family and other animals" - gerald durrell
neither are clique-ish, but are both very good books. "pi" is about a boy stranded in the middle of the ocean on a lifeboat with a zebra and a tiger.
"family" is about an english family that moves to the island of corfu, and how they adjust to a new culture/area. this one is VERY funny.

Try a classic novel. Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility or Emma or Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. You may be surprised, try it!!
