Feeder crickets cost so much at the pet store. I have a baby duck who loves grasshoppers but it is a pain to be running all around our property with a butterfly net 3 times a day to catch grasshoppers. I looked and looked on the internet but could not find if there is such a thing as a grasshopper trap. ??????? Any suggestions on how to build one if there is such a thing?

From U.S. Department of Agriculture:

"Fielding’s traps are based on similar devices that have been catching other insects for perhaps a hundred years. The grasshopper flies into the vertical pane of glass and falls into soapy water. The insect then sinks because the soap breaks the surface tension of the water. Grasshoppers may be attracted to the trap because of the smell of their dead “friends"; they are known to eat dead grasshoppers."

If you want them alive, replace the soapy water with some sort of one-way catch basin, I guess.

The only other suggestion I can think of is to try catching them in the early morning, when they are still quiet from the cold and dew. This way you can sweep the weeds or grass or whatever and hopefully catch enough that you don't need to go out 3 times a day.

Good luck!!

This is difficult, because to build the best trap you need bait! Bait for grasshoppers is all over the place! One does not need to go to a trap to find its food. I really can't offer a solution here for a trap, but you can gather as many as possible, place them in a good size box with ventilation and breed them.

I am sure there is something on the Internet that can lead you to breeding grasshoppers.

Grasshoppers feed on grass and leaves. They drink their water from the morning dew, so you can spray any plants with a water bottle that are in their box. Make sure the plants get plenty of sunlight and use a rich potting soil.

This would make a great habitat for the grasshoppers and should encourage breeding.

It is so easy to build a grasshopper trap that it is almost scary. Take an empty plastic pop or water container and cut off the top just below where it becomes the diameter of the rest of the bottle. Put a bit of weeds, grass or what have you in the bottom of the bottle to act as bait, then invert the top and put it back in the bottle. The top acts sort of like a funnel. The grasshoppers get in, but they can't get back out. When you empty the trap, put fresh weeds etc in the bottle and it is ready to go again. This is a great way to reuse the plastic containers, too.
