I don't think it really matters too much. If someone offers to take you out to eat on a first date, the entire menu is fair game, including the surf and turf. However, it would be wrong to continue to have multiple dinners with a person that you had no romantic interest in, for that would be using someone and last I checked, no one likes to be used.

It's inappropriate to order something that you otherwise wouldn't be willing to pay for yourself. If the situation was reversed (which it should be on the second date) would you be comfortable with your date ordering the most expensive item.

Also, try to consider your date's circumstance. If you know your date is broke, then take it easy. You can always try the "What interests you?" approach before you order. If your date replies "I might order the surf and turf" then sky's the limit. If the date replies "I think I might just get a salad and a glass of water" then take it easy.

YES it matters. If you order something too expensive he may not ask you out again. What if he can't afford to pay like that all the time? Say how everything looks good and you can't decide. Ask him what he's having and you will get a good idea on what to order. I always ordered something that cost less than his, or the same amount, but NEVER more.

Would you order it if you were paying for the meal ???
1st dates are awkward enough, worrying about price of a meal should be the least of your worries . . focus should be on getting to know if you should go on a 2nd date with this person

Hitting your date with flying food when you crack that lobster is embarassing anyway.

I haven't been on a first date for a long time but I think that I wouldn't order the most expensive thing on the menu-I was raised to believe that isn't polite but my guy friends say that most guys don't even think about that stuff.

I feel is very rude for someone to get the most expensive item on the menu when they know they are not the one picking up the tab; there you are showing your character; are you a sensitive person or are you there to used people. men are not stupid
they know what's going on; if you want to find someone;just pretend you're the one picking up the tab; would you want them to do the same to you??? do unto others what you would like done to you.
good day!!

I think that it rude on a first date. Or even a second date if you do not like the person or know they are not doing well financially. If they are doing well for themselves then it really doesnt matter. They usually do not care. It is the ones that are poorer that usually care.

Well I wouldn't order the most expensive thing on the menu, but I'd get something I liked. I might moderate it, but I wouldn't intentionally order something expensive or really really cheap either.
