The fans inside a laptop are small. They don't always circulate air throughout the entire system, but are designed to keep the processor cool. You might want to remove the keyboard and see if there is any dust bunnies blocking the air flow inside the unit!

I can't be certain but if you understand that a curcuit board is situated below the pad, this has chips on and so can produce heat. In any curcuit a bad connection causes heat but unless the unit has been opened I doubt you have a problem. It is also possible that the battery is situated below the mouse pad and as it charges it causes heat. I hope this helps put your mind at ease.

Probably if you were to open the laptop, you would find that right under the hotspot is where a major component, like the power supply, the battery or the processor is located. Or it could be where one of the fan is blowing the heat from the power supply or processor. Not knowing make/model, it is hard to tell.

Unfortunately, heat is common with laptops. Do not open your laptop to see if you can fix it yourself. I’m not sure how old your laptop is, but you will void your warranty if you open it up yourself. I’m also not sure what you consider hot. Bring it to a Fry’s, Best Buy or CompUSA and they can tell you if something needs to be fixed by the manufacturer.
