Most of the time it is because a woman has kept her maiden name and added her husbands. Occasionally a man will add his wife's name. Some hyphenated names have been passed down that way. A few like Edward Bulwer-Lytton add a second name for other reasons. He added his mother's last name when he inherited her estate.

It means that the female does not want to totally give up her maiden last name. Therefore they are spliced into the aforementioned format.

I have a hyphenated last name.
The first part is my maiden name & the last part is my married name.
I'm proud of my family name & I didn't want to just toss it aside.
