Most people start smoking due to stress - they think that it relieves the stress. Smoking is bad for you - yet everyone wants to smoke. It makes you smell bad, and causes health prblems later on in life. Family is stressful - but Im sure we can come up with better options then smoking. Believe me mine is the worst - and I don't smoke.

I started because of peer pressure. All my family and friends smoked and I hated it. But at 17 I wanted to be "cool" like my friends so I started. Because I was so stupid it became a habit for 30 years. Smoking always made me feel dizzy and ill, but I continued on.
After 5 unsuccessful attempts to quit over the course of about 10 years, my 6th time was a charm and I have been smoke free for almost 21 months. I would never start again, this is the best thing I have ever accomplished!

My mother and 2 of my 3 sisters smoked. Growing up I hated it. Used to give them all a hard time (which would tick them off). As soon as I started college, I started smoking. Did family do it--no, I made the choice even knowing my mother had the beginnings of emphysema. But I was young and thought that I would never get hooked or have problems. I'm in my 40s now and I had a terrible time quitting (it's been 13 months--and I still want them) and being sick with bronchitis, sinus infections, etc.

I started smoking because it was cool. They were smoking on TV news and action programs. They smoked in movies. You could smoke almost enywhere you wanted except when gassing up your car. In high school cigs could be bought for a nickle and 3 for a dime. I was allowed to smoke in class at Sir George Williams U in Montreal (you had to bring your own ashtray). When I started work you could smoke at work. I joined the Air Force and smoking was a way of life. That was 1967. Times have changed big time. Its a good thing too.

I started smoking because I thought it was cool. I was 9 years old at the time. I hung out with a crowd of 11 and 12 year olds. They wanted to try it so we did a dare...
I didn't inhale at the time but afterwards I started smoking seriously at the age of 12 and have ever since. It seemed cool to me. No peer pressure but everyone was doing it and I thought I would to.
Biggest mistake I ever done.

I started smoking after I joined the military in 1980. Almost everyone smoked, and it got you out of certain details, like formations.
