Assuming that they both have, say, 2.0Ghz speed.

Are there really two processors in intel core duo that would make it much faster and efficient?

Yes, a 2GHZ Core due is I believe more than twice as fast than a 2GHZ P4.

Yes, two processor cores in one die chip. However, you need to take advantage of software which utilizes both cores in order to see any real speed increases, such as video encoding, etc..

The Intel Core Duo runs at a lower clock speed than the Pentium 4, but is highly efficient since it carries out more instructions per clock cycle than the pentium 4, and runs cooler too as a result.

By the way, the guy above me is wrong, stop talking bull$hit kid.

Taken from Intel's website:

With its two execution cores, the Intel Core Duo processor is optimized for multi-threaded applications and multitasking. You can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching programs - while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background.

A Pentium 4 chip has only one core. Though you can run multi-threads with a Pentium 4 chip, in the end the Core duo can do more instructions hence making it faster.

The link below compares the two chips in action.

Good Luck!

the funda of intel core duo is that at its core it has two processors fused into one whereas pentium 4 is just one. core duo is 64 bit whereas pentium 4 is 32 bit. To sum up, core duo is approx 3.97 times faster than pentium 4 according to intel standards.

According to my brother. Apple was trying to developed a processor that wouldn't get hot, which slows the speed. but they gave up. it's impossible to make such thing.
Intel Had the idea only way to keep the processor much cooler is making it double, the cooler the more Windows you can open without loosing speed

for example, The intel Core duo 2.66GHz is far more better performing than 3.4GHz HT
