First some background.

As a former bodyguard- way back in the late 70's, I often had to coordinate security arrangements for a wide variety of celebrities.

Celebrity is an odd creature, all too often the people who seek the fame and adulation of fans- are actually after acceptance and ‘love’ and use it as a way to prove to themselves- or often neglecting parents- but when they achieve that fame they find it is cloying, intrusive and all too often emotionally overwhelming.

Look at any study and you’d be surprised how many “stars” are the results of early childhood trauma and broken homes.

They get what they want- and as the saying goes- be careful of what you ask for.

Times have changed, it used to be you could see Paul Neuman or any other top movie star simply walking around.

Now- it’s changed.

Disguises are often used. With the ridicules lengths paparazzi go to often stalking certain celebs it has become insane. Rarely do you see them simply walking around, except in certain communities.

For instance, there is a town in Oregon, a relatively large number of well known celeb’s live there or simply stay there, yet walk around, no disguises, no elaborate systems of bodyguards, their kids go to school, it quiet, not glamourous, and the locals simply treat them like anyone else.

We’ve lost a lot of that. But then, today’s celeb’s- like Paris Hilton, have done nothing to earn their “status” a real star is a Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, or even Robin William’s, people who have grown as performers, have talent and skill, as opposed to being on survivor or doing something stupid and getting their 15 min of fame.

So, yes sometimes they just walk around, others call the press to announce they are “walking around” for a photo op.

I've been to America a lot, in fact I spent 6 weeks travelling around a couple of years ago, but I never saw any celebs walking around! We even walked around Hollywood expecting to see a few, but nothing!

I think you're more likely to see the smaller stars if any, as the bigger ones will stay in hiding for exactly the reason you said, as otherwise they'd be hounded by the press, or crazy fans!

I don't know where you're from, but I live in London, in the UK, and have seen a few celebs wandering around here. Not huge ones, but ones recognisable from TV! Also, Big Brother contestants - i know you can't really call them celebs, but they hang out in expensive bars lots, and have their favourites, so there's a good chance you'll see one if you go to the right place!

Also remember, they're just human, and if you do ever see one, it'll probably be an anticlimax!

Celebrities do just walk around but I think people in L.A. (as opposed to anywhere else) are more likely to see them. I'm from NJ so there are not too many celebrities here. Though once, my sister saw James Gandolfini at a diner, and I saw Billy Joel walking into a store in NYC. Other than that, celebrity sightings are few and far between here. I think maybe if you can get into those trendy clubs you might see someone but I'm not into that stuff. Can you imagine standing in line for hours just to be told you're not cool enough to get in? No thanks!

It depends on where you are. When I lived in other states, it was very rare but not unheard of. Now that I live & work in NYC, while celeb sitings are not an everyday thing, they are definitely around but they are rarely swarmed. They're just people like the rest of us. It is fun though to see jaded New Yorkers poking each other going "Hey that's so and so!" Ages ago, a friend and I passed Kelsey Grammer on the street and she thought she was joking when she said "Look! There's Fraiser!" as we rushed back to the office. I looked at him, he looked at me and we both laughed at her but I never even slowed down. TV audiences are not indicative of the every day behavior of the rest of us.

America is a big place and we don't all live near Los Angeles or New York City where most of the celebrities frequent.

I saw Roddy Piper in an Oregon store....No one was swarming him so I didn't want to be the only schmuck to so I left him alone. I also saw Tim McGraw in a mall in Oregon...left him alone too (other than staring at him)...He was having lunch...Chubby Checker backstage at a car show/bikini contest...I was 3/4 naked so I didn't exactly have paper on me....So from what I have seen, the celebs can occasionally make it out and be left alone....Hey celebs, come to Oregon!
;O)

First of all the fans are told to go crazy. You know in the show "America's Got Talent?" Well in the finale of the show I was sitting right next to the judjed Peirs Morgan, David Hasselhoff, and Brandy. I was also next to Regis Philbin and Tom Green.

I think you have a very glamourised view of America. I doubt very much that it's wall to wall celebrities wherever you go. It'll be exactly the same as here. If you go to London/LA or other big cities you MIGHT get to see someone famous but you probably won't.

Of course! I live in Southern California and have seen many famous people doing the same real-life, even mundane, things that we commoners do - shopping, taking the kids to Disneyland, etc. The thing is, they don't usually look like they do on TV, in movies and in photos. Most are shorter than you expect them to be, especially the men.

I saw Jerry Lewis in a San Diego airport... he was sitting at a table with a younger man (presumably manager?) and eating a hotdog. People stopped to stare, but I didn't see anyone actually approach him.

I've met plenty of musicians, and as long as you're NOT a crazed, screaming lunatic, they're pretty much down to earth.
