A lot of people in Australia and indeed all over the world were deeeply affected recently by the death of Steve Irwin. I'm glad to say that it looks like the worst is now over for Richard Hammond and that he will survive his "supercar" crash - but if he had died, do you think the response to this popular daredevil TV presenter's demise would have been similar to that shown for the late Mr Irwin? At least no stingrays were responsible for what happened this time around

emmylou, I doubt his family will be perusing Yahoo Answers. It's a free country and I think we are discussing this topic responsibly. Plus - if you're in the public eye, you can expect the public to talk about you

He is not a hero in my books
he has doen nothing heroic
his claim to fame is that he copresents a TV program with 2 other lunatics.
brave, yes,
foolhardy maybe
celebrity maybe
heroic definately not.
just because someone is on telly, it doens't make them heroic. I fail to understand tha tcult of celebrity that seems to exist in this country.

Not really and had he died he still wouldn't be. My reason for this is that I don't aspire to his way of driving. Anyone can learn to wheel spin a car, or do doughnuts. Drifting is slighlty harder still, but real fast drivers don't get the car out of shape arond corners the way these guy's do. Anyone, I mean anyone, can drive fast in a straight line. Admittedly, to get into a jet powered car in an attempt to break a record, takes balls......big ones.......or enough pressure from the director/producer to beat the competion programmes!!
Unfortunately, Hammond is a great presenter with an enviable role in Top Gear. He loves cars and bikes, thats true, but he's no racing driver, nor is Clarkson, nor is James. 5th Gear, on the other hand has real racing drivers who are not getting the cars out of shape, drive faster, harder and can better comment on the driveability of the cars their testing.
Real hero's are dedicated, understated role models, aware that the way they act is mimicked by their fans and followers. Real hreo's don't have to be dead, to be a hero!!
I do however, think that he would have been idolised in a similar fashion to Steve Irwin, on a smaller scale though.

No he wouldnt be a hero he is nowhere near as famous as Steve Irwin!
whats getting on my nerves is all this rubbish about what tv presenters should be allowed to do! at the end of the day he wanted to race the car so it should be his choice if he never wants to get in a car again or if he wants to race that car again in a years time! this country is becoming to much of a nanny state!

He's not a HERO of sorts but he is a very funny, genuinely nice guy.
People have qualities that either attract or dispel others.
He certainly has the qualitiies that would attract most people.
I certainly enjoy watching him on the tv and would be saddened for the loss and for his family if the crash had been fatal.
I wish him well and hope he makes a full recovery

The Hamster is a great presenter. But IF he had passed on the public reaction wouldn't have been as big as the 'Urwin' incident because the Aussie's only have a few famous people to shout about, apart from all the convicts that we sent over years ago.

No, I haven't mutilated any rocket powered cars meself
I am not sure how serious your question is but I see a common theme between steve irwin, richard hammond and peter brock;
The all lived their lives doing what they really enjoyed, and they all took risks.
If you gamble your life enough times, you will lose.
sorry

I don't think you can compare the living to the dead. Both were accidents, and of that - very unfortunate. That said, both men knew the risks and that's why we love them. I don't consider them hero's though, I think that title should be left to the those who fight for our countries. Who would have thought the whole world would have mourned for HRH Princess Diana? people react differently to different tragedies, it all depends on your personal opinion of these people. I loved Steve, I think Richard is great and Di - sorely missed.

A great (small) chap but I think that hero is over the top.
I hope that he recovers soon and the BBC do not tame down the show as a result.
