For a classic novel, I would recommend The Count of Monte Cristo. I know what you're thinking, that you could either see the movie or have seen the movie, so why read the book? The movie, while good in its own right, barely scratches the surface of all the intricacies that are in the book. I read it after I watched the movie and was astounded at everything the movie missed. And I LOVE that movie!
For a contemporary novel, I would suggest one that I am currently reading called Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. It dabble a bit in the realm of fantasy, but the writing is very interesting: eloquent with a hint of sarcasm.

Well you could try Lord of the Rings - always good.
Or for a modern novel full of mystery and social intrigue how about 'Secret History' by Donna Tart?
'The Dice Man' by Luke Rhinhart (sp?) is also a fabulous novel - almost a psychological thriller in some ways!
And one of my all time favourites, although not strictly a novel is Paradise lost.

I guess it would depend on what type of things you like to read. I absolutely love the Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell. They are about a medical examinor and she gets some pretty strange cases. The first one I ever read was The Black Notice, though it isn't the first in the series.

"The Grapes of Wrath" very well may be the finest novel written by an American author. I read it once about every five years.
