I don't know how bad it is, sounds like you are trying to be sweet, but just haven't used the right words.
My fiancee did that. I told him I wanted to get my nails done, and he said why? I told him so I could be beautiful, he says "if you need to paint yourself to be beautiful, then you should just borrow my nephew's paintball gun, shoot yourself in the face and be done with it".
I asked him if what he was trying to say was that I was beautiful just the way I was, he said "and that too!".
