Here is a link to a sad story from the annals of nearly forgotten American history. It is about an event that took place a century ago that truly strains credibility. And yet it happened. In 1904 a group of Congolese pygmies were brought to the United States and placed on display as exhibits at the St. Louis World's Fair. Subsequently, in 1906, one of these pygmies went on display in a cage in the Monkey House.of the Bronx Zoo. This sparked a furor and protests by a group of African-American ministers soon put an end to it but not before the new exhibit attracted hordes of visitors who appeared more interested in viewing the poor pygmy than his monkey companions. Do you suppose our hypothetical forlorn E.T. could suffer some similar fate today or have we as a society evolved beyond such behavior?
