i had 1 in an old cottage and i swore by it. it was cleaner and more efficient than an open fire. no sparks jumpin out an burnin your capet. you can keep a pot of tea on the top, boilin all the time. and it can burn overnight, wake up open the valve and off it goes again

The wood burning stove is far more efficient because 1. The air can be regulated thus controlling the speed of the burn and therefore the temperature output. 2. The stoves themselves are designed so that the fire is routed through baffles which heat the stove before all the heat is lost up the chimney.
In turn, the stove radiates the heat back into the room.
An open fire can not be controlled and most of the heat is lost up the chimey.

Open grates convect most heat up the chimney.

Closed stoves conduct the heat to the metal walls which then radiates into the room.

A closed stove controls the amount of air getting under the fuel and so makes ti burn much longer.

Closed stoves are much better. Its easy to get one that will produce far too much heat from a little fuel whereas the open fire needs constant attention and doesn't really heat up the whoel room too well.

I have used both in the past. The main reason most people prefer stoves over grates is the length of time it burns, and the safety factor. A stove, by definition, is a closed item, the fire is inside, not open, so there is less danger of sparks popping out into the rug, etc. Fire in a stove usually lasts longer so you don't have to put fuel into it as often. An open grate, however, is much more romantic and leads to more immediate heat.

Efficiency: the fuel is converted to heat and tranfered to the room better than a fireplace.

My brother's ranch has two wood-stoves, both Fisher Stoves of cast-iron. One in the living room to heat the house, and a smaller one in his office/shop.

A GOOD Woodstove is better than an open grate for heating a room or home... the whole stove absorbs the fires heat and puts it out into the room. Also, since the fire-box is enclosed, you can adjust the burn-rate of your fuel... two good logs can last all night.

Though a fireplace is better for bear-skin rug action, many newer cast-iron stoves can support a thermal glass door allowing the owner to see the light and flicker of the flames

An airtight wood burning stove is much much more efficient than an open fireplace...
A fireplace will use 4 - 6 times more wood keep the house warm.
A fireplace sucks the warm house air up and out the chimmny as it burns...
I have used both for many years...
Lots and lots of technical & scientific studies done which leave no room for arguement..
Ben Frankiln figured this out many years ago...
Lots of city folks who have never known anything but central heat and fireplaces as semi-functional ornaments are clueless about the efficency of wood burning stoves vs. fireplaces for heating houses...

A wood burner it’s more efficient & safer, you can also boil a kettle or cook on the top of it. It makes delicious casseroles and braised meat, as well as a great place to warm pies and bread. (Delicious)
Some even do your central heating and/or hot water.
We prefer a multi fuel stove as you can use both solid fuel and wood on them, So that when you are not feeling well or do not have a supply of DRY wood you do have an alternative fuel to use.

This winter I had my first experience of a wood burning stove as the only source of heat in a stone cottage...And I can tell you for sure that an open grate is much better! A woodburner just doesn't get warm enough. Just my personal opinion though. :-)

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/QTFpq
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.
