It depends on the tulip. Most places sell tulips, during the season they are to be planted. If you see tulips sold,NOW,then they are FALL tulips. You will need a tulip planter.Ea, species of tulip requires a different depth to be planted.I always recomend use HOLLAND BULB BOOSTER too.Read ea. package of tulip to see how far down you need to plant and which way the tulip goes in the ground (up or down) Make sure your soil is loose so as the roots can expand.
After harvest, just cut the bulb at the base,DO NOT PULL THEM UP. and they will continue to REproduce ea. year.

Plant them in the fall. October is the lates you want to plant them. Make sure you have at least 6" inches or better of soil over them. If you live in a state that freezes deeper then plant them according to the freeze level of your state. If it freezes 12 to 14 inches the plant them 2 to four inches deeper. In the spring time they will grow and the colors will be nice to look at and admire.

Fall is better because they go through the freeze of winter. Make sure your bulbs are put in the ground the right direction and give them enough space in between because they grow pretty quickly once spring comes.
