I kinda need more info, but

1. It probably means "find the variable (or 'unknown') in each expression"

2. simplify using exponents would be something like this:
2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 in exponents would be

2 to the power of 3

times

3 to the power of 2=

8 X 9
which equals 72

It probably means simplify the expression or solve for the unknown. Your question is a bit too general for me to be of much help, though.

Still not much info, but I give it a try.
using exponents may mean that you write something like this

59000 = 5.9*10^4
100000=10^5
0.005=5*10^-3
