I am curious, and would like some feedback about an idea I have for Halloween treats this year. I would like to make some playdough and give it out in small clear containers to the trick or treaters. I am the type of person who would still love to be able to give out candied apples and such, but for obvious reasons won't. I have tried to place my mind in todays parents, and think of all the reasons they may not want their kids to play with the homemade playdough .... but can not come up with anything. Do you think this is a good idea, and is there something this Grandma is missing about the fear out there concerning Halloween treats? thanks in advance!
footnote: I live in a very small town, so the big city stigma is not there, but I just moved here several years ago and am not well known.

Hmmm - you were a perfect candidate to give out homemade playdough to neighbor kids until you stated that you are not well known. No parent is going to take anything homemade for their kids from someone they do not know - that's pretty much a fact these days, even in small towns. So sorry - because I would like to be the kind who could hand out popcorn balls & stuff too!!!
My suggestion - decorate your yard well in advance of Halloween night & make an effort to get to know your neighbors with children. Be sure to invite them to stop by for treats & goodies on Halloween night, let them know you'll be home. On Halloween night, set out lots of jack o'lanterns & sit out in a lawn chair to hand out your candy. Keep the containers of playdough set aside - then tell the parents what it is, explain that you made it & what type of ingredients is in it - then ask each parent if you can give their child the playdough. This will show consideration for their children & should allay any fears they may have at accepting something homemade. But make an effort to get to know your neighbors - you live in a small town now, there's no excuse not to!!!!! Have fun & enjoy all of the season!!!

I understand wanting to do something a little different and I understand that making something puts a little of your love into each thing. I personally would LOVE to make cookie cutter cookies for EVERYONE and decorate them to the hilt. I love that but in todays workd we can't do that. even at school they have the rtule that it have to come from a bakery or be the store bought kind. I don't think that play dought is the answer. Some little kid may try to eat it and as a mom I would not want the mess.

Home made play dough does not work in the play dough molds the same way as the real kind and it can be a big pain.

I am sure there are other ways to participate. See if the school has a safe trick or treat night and maybe they would let you pass out treats. Good luck

Something like that in a smaller town would be fine. You are right, that same stigma is not attached. It is such a shame about all this stuff. Make the home made playdough, put a little tag on it maybe, "This playdough made by and then name and address."

I would talk you your neighbors and get their opinions. I live in a small town as well, and we have 6 children. without knowing who you were, I would probably make my children throw it away, not to mention the sheer mess it makes is just awful. I am realistic and understand some people hate giving away candy and such, however children really don't want much but that, a good alternative could be fruit snacks, not as loaded with sugar and has a bit of nutrient value to it, not to mention kids will like that better than an apple. (they just get thrown at houses around here. Good luck

Sorry Grandma, I know you mean well, but kids want CANDY for Halloween, no toothbrushes, no notepads, no playdough, just candy, for some kids (like mine) that was the only time of year they were allowed to eat candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until it was gone! Your playdough idea is sweet, but not as sweet as candy! I hope I didn't hurt your feelings, you sound like a very sweet lady :)

I think that play dough would be fine. but it is messy and a lot of parents are lazy. And they dont want their kids to play with it cause they dont want to have to clean it up. And if no one actually plays with it your effort will just be wasted time. And while some kids will be truly excited to get the play dough (really young kids) other will be pissed off cause all they wanted was some candy. Its Halloween, and candy is what they are looking for. And when you pass out play dough you will be known as the new old lady in town who gives play dough (not candy) on Halloween and everyone will steer clear of your house, cause they just want candy! I think that you should just stick with good old candy. And not waste your time with the play dough. When I was a kid we knew were all the good house were. And the good houses gave out whole candy bars. If you want to be a good house just give out some good candy! Good luck! You are too cute!

I am giving out playdough that I purchased from the store. Maybe a recipe for homemade playdough would be better to give out with a halloween pencil or sucker.

Well, as a parent I wouldn't have a problem with homemade play-dough for my older kids, but the little ones would want to eat it and might feel disappointed. Play-dough isn't recommended for kids under 3. Some parents may have a problem with it, you never know, so I would ask them if they come to the door with their kids. You might want to have some little toys on hand for the ones who are bothered by it and the little ones.

When i was a kid all i wanted was candy. If i got anything else it usually ended up in the garbage. Sorry, but i think the best thing you can give kids at halloween is candy!
