I think is because of their body composition. There is something on their "skin" that protects them, like a shield.....

There's no scientific reason: they'd never survive the heat. However, the first cockroach ancestors appeared more than 350 million years ago, and the modern cockroach walked up on the scene in the early cretaceous about 145 million years ago, so having outlived just about everybody on the geologic scale (biodiversity today being nowhere NEAR what it was even 12,000 years ago), the cockroach just seems pretty near invulnerable: thus people say: it'll survive where all other species fail. I mean, think about it: roaches survived the Permian Triassic transition in which 96% of marine life and over 70 percent of land life was annhiliated! That's pretty impressive survival for a mere bug. And remember, that's not 70% of the ANIMALS: that's 70% of the SPECIES that were COMPLETELY and irrevocably destroyed.

This is actually a false notion...it stems from the fact that cockroaches appear to be able to withstand larger doses of radiation than most creatures, but the ammount of radiation produced from an atomic blast is more than even they can survive.

Beacause they are gross and horrid. Apparently you can cut off a cockroaches head and it will live for upto 9 days before it starves to death! A friend of mine put one in the freezer when he was yonger and a week later, thawed it out and it ran off, I just think they are invincible, and it does make you wonder what goes into the sprays that kill them!

Maybe they saw cockroaches in Nagasaki and Hiroshima after the blasts because they had nowhere to hide

This is a good question. I dont think people really know. Do you know if people actually tested that on cockroaches?

They don't need much to survive as well. They can feed for a week from a fingerprint on a wall.
