Don't just check to see if they are accredited. Check to see what accreditation agency has accredited them. Many fly-by-night on line schools (and others) make up their own accreditation agencies that sound like the real ones.

Take the program to a local educator, your HS counselor or department head of your current school if you are looking at grad school.

Make sure the program you are looking at has ALL the appropriate accreditation. For example, Walden University has North Central States accreditation for it's grad psychology program but doesn't have APA accreditation. That's a red flag that needs to be looked at.

The best choice in knowing if an online college is legitimate is buy U.S. News and World Reports listing of the best colleges in the United States. Look for degree programs you are interested and visit their website. They will call it world campus, distance learning, elearning, etc. Also, most community colleges are now offering courses and degree programs on the web. I have listed a few places that offer degrees online as an example.

Try wikipedia, i found out the college I was interested in was total rubbish and not accredited through them, and so had enough time to find somewhere else.

find out what online college that your wonder about and
study the information that it is giving about the college and ask for information to be sent to you or ask for a number that you can contact or ask some one if they every try a online college
