I am 8 weeks pregnant and last night I had decided to have a half a cigarette , bad I know. I felt incredibly guilty.I had read though, that it can cause a miscarriage if it is an excessive amount bit is a half a cigarette excessive? I went to bed as usual very hungry, but instead of waking up a billion times in the night like I usually do to eat or go to the restroom, I did not wake up at all. What's worse is that I woke up this morning and I was not even hungry. I don't have any dis-charge , I feel fine, I never had morning sickness to begin with, just nausea and bloating and the breasts hurting, but I am worried. Should I be?

I seriousy doubt that half a cigarette is going to cause a miscarriage (although still not good for either you or the baby!).
As long as you are not spotting, cramping, etc, you are probably OK. It would be a good idea to get checked out by your doctor, though, just in case.
Hope this helps, and congratulations on your pregnancy!

A half of cigarette will not a miscarriage make. I am not advocating smoking for any reason. Not every one is the same
but I had my child before the warning on cigarettes. I gave up drinking and smoking pot. I chain smoked. Always a heavy smoker and maybe we were just lucky. 35 years ago she came out healthy as can be. If one are two cigarettes a day make you feel better there is no harm. No more. Coke syrup is good for nausea and you can get that at a pharmacy. Eat properly and I was not at all starving all the time as some of my friends were during there pregnancy . More important if you have any fears call your Doctor. I also want to add don't overload on guilt now
because you have the rest of yours and your child's life to be a wash with guilt. Just ask your Mother.

I wouldn't worry. When I'm pregnant I lose my appetite, and smoking has been known to be an appetite suppresant anyhow. Half a cigarette isn't going to make you or break you no matter what any other people on here say. I'm working my way down to quitting, I'm down to only two cigarettes a day and I've only known that I'm pregnant since Saturday. I'll have completely quit by tomorrow, but I'm not worried about it causing miscarriage. If you take heed to everything you hear or read about then you'd have to live on crackers and water your whole pregnancy. Don't stress, that could be a source of your appetite problem too. Relax and know that your reaction this time is a good reason to not do it again :) Everybody slips and does something they're not supposed too, don't worry. Congrats by the way!

It sounds like your guilt over having the cigarette is making your mind trick you into having worries about miscarrying.
Don't worry.
Around 8 weeks it is really hard to feel pregnant. Nothing much is going on in terms of symptoms other than the ones you listed, but even those come and go at various times.
If you are not bleeding or cramping you are ok, try not to panic.
We all fall off the wagon once in a while. Old habits die hard.
Just remember today is a new day and you can get through without having another cigarette.

NO. anywhere between 8 to 10 weeks your HCG levels plateau and you may have some relief from morning sickness and such. This happened to me I had horrible nausea and morning sickness and then one day I woke up and I was fine. I went and had my HCg levels tested and they told me I had miscarried. I went to the doctor and they looked for a heart beat and he was fine he is 3 now. I should have sued but oh well. Come to find out I learned what I just told you. Anyways, I would suggest first to calm down extreme stress is not good in your pregnancy. 1 cigarette will not cause a miscarriage think of all the women that smoke throughout their pregnancy. It isn't healthy to smoke so I would suggest not doing it again but no, it will not cause a miscarriage. But I think you should be fine.

I had a hard time giving up smoking too when I found out I was prego. I actually still had one a day till about 4 1/2 months. I know it's horrible but I was still in shock. I am 7 months now and my baby is fine. I have day sometimes though where I don't really feel pregnant at all. Especially when I was still early in the pregnancy. You are probably fine. If you had a miscarriage you would know. But quit smoking, I know it's hard but you will feel so much better once you do, you and your baby. Good luck!

Unless you are spotting and/or just don't feel right, I wouldn't worry too much. If your in doubt call your doctor and get checked out. Again you aren't bleeding don't get too worried. Tender breasts are normal and it is caused by the build of hormones in your body. Take it from someone whose had 3 miscarriages in 2 years, you know your body and if something doesn't feel right to you go to your doctor. My miscarriages felt different but all of them started with me spotting blood. As far as the half a cigarette, I had a friend who smoked her entire pregnancy and her son was fine. I wouldn't advise it but I smoked the first 8 weeks of the pregnancies of the 2 girls I have now and they are both healthy. Again you know your body and if it doesn't feel right call the doctor. Get plenty of rest and eat right and everything will be fine. Jut remember God always has a plan and we don't always know what it is. If you aren't religious my apologies. My screen name is holloway_diana72 if you need to talk, I know how scary it can be in those early weeks. My oldest daughter was my second pregnancy and I was scared up until the doctor showed her to me after my C-section. Good Luck sweetie!

You are fine, I bet your baby is fine. Sounds like you have a lot of stress though and that CAN cause miscarriages. I have had two of those too. I have children who were born alive as well.
I smoked once as well. The primary issue is the lack of oxygen to the brain. Your oxygen levels fall, theirs do too, but it is temporary. Stop stressing and go see the doctor for a doppler so you can hear the heartbeat :) Stress is bad for you both.
You should not smoke, but then you have a vacuum. If you can stand licorice, get it. They make red vines too, strawberry. It is wonderful replacement. I also suggest you do meditation and some sort of excercise whenever you have the urge to smoke:) It worked wonders for moi:)
Good luck with your Baby:)

Nope. You shouldn't be so worried. If you're having trouble with quitting smoking, ask your Ob/Gyn about Wellbutrin XL. It cut my nicotine craving and helped me calm down and enjoy my pregnancies. I think you just need to relax. Half a cigarette is no big deal. Enjoy these months as much as you can. Keep a journal. You will forget the little details of this magical time. Pick a favorite song for your baby and sing it every day. When your baby is born, he/she will recognize it and find it soothing. Congratulations on your little miracle!
