You who never arrived
in my arms, Beloved, who were lost
from the start,
I don't even know what songs
would please you. I have given up trying
to recognize you in the surging wave of the next
moment. All the immense
images in me- the far-off, deeply-felt landscape,
cities, towers, and bridges, and unsuspected
turns in the path,
and those powerful lands that were once
pulsing with the life of the gods-
all rise within me to mean
you, who forever elude me.
You, Beloved, who are all
the gardens I have ever gazed at,
longing. An open window
in a country house-, and you almost
stepped out, pensive, to meet me.
Streets that I chanced upon,-
you had just walked down them and vanished.
And sometimes, in a shop, the mirrors
were still dizzy with your presence and, startled,
gave back my too-sudden image. Who knows?
perhaps the same bird echoed through both of us
yesterday, separate, in the evening...

This for when I feel sad-
When chasing days make me sad,
I don't think about myself;
I'll live as long as I should.
Its because time may change you
I fear sunsets and feel lost.
This for when I am happy-
Watch now the beauty of the crescent moon as it ascends,
Ripping the darkness with its light; look , a scythe of silver
Mowing a black prairie that's clustered with white narcissi.

I don't read it. But i write some :
For a lady questioner who liked diamonds. She wanted a riddle-
With lots of faces, not a crowd.
sings in color, not aloud.
The more i weigh, the more they sigh.
some kill to have, some love to buy..
This was a light hearted birthday poem i wrote for a questioner. It lost (",). -
I wish i could think, of something to say,
to make your birthday nice.
But it's been fifty years, and too many beers,
And you look like you've been here twice.
I got you a wig - you know, just in-case.
And botox for all of your head.
But they caught in the breeze, in the bushes and trees.
And the Pug looks real good, but he's dead.

The Fantasia of a fallen gentleman on a cold, bitter night.
Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy.
In a flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth's the very stuff of poesy.
Oh God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.

Salutation to the dawn
Look to this day.For it is life,
The very life of life.
In it's brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence:
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement,
For yesterdays but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision,
But to day well lived makes yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well,therefore,to this day.
Such is the salutation to the dawn.

I'd go with the Kipling verse above, but here is another:-
What is this life if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time when fields we pass,
To see where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

I liked your choice.
My favorite is
I walked for miles at night along the beach,
composing bad blank verse and searching endlessly
for someone wonderful
who would step out of the darkness
and change my life.
it never crossed my mind that
that person could be ME
