The answer would be D. ($137.70) This however, assumes, there are no pre-tax deductions. Pre-tax deductions, excluding 401K type deductions, are not subject to Social Security or Medicare taxes.

In other words, if you had a $100 pretax deduction for medical, dental, vision, etc. you would only be taxed on $1700.00

Just multiply 1800 by 0.0765. It should be simple just from inspection, since these numbers are all at different orders of magnitude. If 1% of 1800 is 18 (just divide by 100), which of these numbers would be about ten times that? (7.65 is "about ten" in terms of orders of magnitude.)

Your employer doesn't keep the money though. They give it to the government who then flushes down a toilet somewhere or uses it to spy on you or uses it to kill people.
