i'm going overseas and putting my winter clothes into storage, the jackets will be placed into carboard box, will this harm the leather leaving them in a box for a long time? do i need to do anything to preserve the leather?

ALL good answers here... Yes leather needs air... By trial and error I found out the hard way many years ago... Nothing quite like pulling out a FUZZY, with mold, leather jacket, *cough*hack*.

Protect the leather first, using any of the leather products you find in the store... and putting that moisture absorbing packet in with your stuff will be a benefit as well. I have used bees wax protectant which you apply with a blow dryer for heat. No more mold for me !! : )

Yes.. leather jackets need air. when I store my things for the winter, I put sweaters, etc in plastic containers but the leather jackets.. I leave out in the closet with no covering due to the necessity for air to circulate around the leather jacket(s)

Mold has a tendency to form on leather - I would suggest a tub of Damp Rid - place it near the box that holds the jacket.

Treat them first with leather cleaner and then store them./ This reason is because bacteria on the leather will grow and put stains that cannot be removed.

i would take it to the cleaners they can store your thing for up to 12 months and if it messes up they will be responsible if they dont store it the right way
