That depends on where you open the business and what type of business it is.

If you sell merchandise you will need a sales tax permit and possible a permit from the city your store is in. For something like insurance or Auto sales you will probably need to post some form of bond.

I would suggest contacting the Chamber of Commerce in the city you plan on opening your business in. They will usually have some form of Small Business Starter Packet with all of the basic info for your area.

Contact your Secretary of State office for your particular State. They either have this information in package form online or can mail it to you.
