no one true definition, because there are several reasons a person may be labeled as "disabled". for a parking permit, there is one set of criteria, for getting disability payments from insurance, another set of criteria, for qualifying to get ADA lawsuits filed, another set. It is defined situationally.

That's an excellent question. I agree with the earlier answerer who said it is defined as when a person is unable to work. It's possible, for instance, that a person might be able to drive, but not work at their given profession anymore. Say someone is a construction worker and had a terrible accident leaving him/her unable to handle the physical labor involved in that profession. They are no longer able to earn a living. Driving, however, would not be out of the question. Your tree-climbing disabled person? Well that's another story altogether and smacks of fraud against the system.

That question I can't answer exactly but I think being disabled means you can't do things most normal people can do. Being in a wheelchair, it really pisses me off to see a person get out of their car, walk with no difficulty in to the mall where I know they are staying for hours, shopping. If you need someone's help to get into certain places (i.e. a place with a step into it), to me, that defines disabled. But who knows if that is an accurate definition. Hope that helps.

It actually depends on which state you reside, there are different litmus tests in different states. For instance, some states define it as not being able to perform the job you were trained for, others say you can't do anything at all.The best thing you can do is check with your local Social Security office.
