Back in the late 1980's it was totally uncool to carry your backpack with two straps. Though I broke several straps because I had so many books.

We all broke straps. It just wasn't cool to use both straps. Nobody knows why. I eventually used both straps because I was tired of breaking straps because I had soo many books and it was pretty much impossible to carry all of my books with just one strap. But it was totally verboten to use both shoulders, so I used both straps on one shoulder. Nothing about the 80's made any sense.

I carried mine with one strap when it was cool to do that. By the time I got to highschool that wasn't in anymore so it was back to 2 straps.

When we were younger i think people thought it was 'cool' to just use one strap, however as time passed two straps was more common because people didn't care less and it was much better for the bag and the body!

I carried mine on one shoulder. I also went to school in the late 80's. I never broke a strap though. My shoulders did hurt.

I went to school in the 90's, and I only carried it with one strap, although I constantly had to rotate cause it hurt to leave it on one shoulder for too long

I used both straps; because even then I had heard using one was bad for your back. I was not cool, but I didn't care.

Nobody carried one in the 50's and 60's, and early 70's. This is a relatively new trend started in the 80's.

Well, I know this will show my age....but we didn't use backpacks. I went to grade school in the 70's, and we just carried our books.
