I speak 5 and understand 6. Plus I'm soon to start 2 others. I find that the best way is to focus on your favorite hobby: for e.g. I LOVE music. I'm an addict. Well, what I do is that I do a research on bands and singers who perform in the language I want to learn (you will always find local rock-pop/rock-alternative rock bands and singers in every countries!), choose the ones I prefer, download the lyrics from internet or just buy the cds with the booklets and start singing along, repeating and training my prononciation while learning vocabulary and having fun! And altough sometimes I sound very very stupid it makes my friends roar with laughter and it's a blast!!! ;o)
An other easy way is to find children's books or even better comic books, that helps too. Then another idea would be to surf the web for articles but I find that less easy; learning a new language is already hard enough you don't want to make it boring!!
Hope it will help,
Take care!
PS. Hurray for Haylow!

I think all depends in what time of learner you are. For example, some people are very visual, while others are very auditive. Once you figure it out pick a language program that fits your learning skills. I tried the cd-roms, the books, but I learn faster and rather have the interaction of a classroom. In many areas the local community college or school district provides programs for personal enrichment at a low cost which include languages. If that is your style you could also look into that.

Try to find native speakers who are willing to help you.
Write down every word that you learn in the new language.
Write (not type) it several times. There is a direct connection between writing something down and remembering it.

Finding a pen pal or online chat partner would really motivate you to learn, plus you would have to do your "homework", i.e. read grammar books, do the exerecises, read other novels and listen to native speakers according to your level.

Total immersion is the best way - go live with people that speak that language only.
