I drove my car to work and the heater does not come on untill I reach there, which is about 20 minutes away. I asked a mechanic about the problem and he said that the heater works fine. Is there anything I can do to get the heater working faster, besides letting the car warm up for 20 minutes?

you probably need to change the thermostat in it,,there supposed to be changed once a year whether they need it or not but most people don't have it done until it goes out or something,i own a repair shop,,and i have seen 10 year old vehicles come in,with the original thermostats in them and most of the time it will be because the heater is not getting hot enough,or takes to long to heat up,,id change the thermostat,,and have it flushed out for winter, and it will be fine,,good luck,i hope this helps.

Since you don't give any details about the car..... Diesels take forever to heat up the coolant enough for the heater to work well. Gas engines heat up faster. You can either start the car 20 minutes earlier (won't help much for a diesel in the cold) or you can install a block heater and a coolant heater that plugs into 120 volt house power. You plug in the heaters overnight and when you go to start your car in the morning it warms up much faster.
