They make you lay down and then they do a pap smear. Its kind of weird the first time, but it will be ok. It only lasts a few minutes.

You will be asked to remove all clothing. If your doctor is male, there should be a female in the room with you while he does the exam. You will be asked to place your feet in the stirrups and slide your bottom to the very end of the table. The doctor will insert a speculum, using lubricant, and he will open it wider to be able to visualize your cervix. This is a little uncomfortable, but not really painful if you just try to relax. He will then use a swab or brush type device to swab your cervix and obtain cells from it. These will be put onto a slide and examined under microscope in a lab to determine if there are any cells there that may indicate cancer or another condition. The doctor will remove the speculum and insert his fingers while using the other hand to press on your lower abdomen. This allows him to feel your uterus. If there are any polyps or cysts there, he can usually feel them that way. Some doctors do a rectal exam as well, but many don't. This is just one finger in the anus for a couple of seconds. Lots of lube, so it doesn't really hurt. He'll help you to scoot back onto the table and examine your breasts for lumps. This is not painful. You may have blood drawn at some point, and you will probably be asked for a urine sample. They may check your blood pressure as well. It's scary and a little embarrassing, but there's usually not any real pain involved. Make sure your doctor and nurse know it's your first time so they will try to explain things more as they go along. Good luck!

If you're sexuall active and over 18 they will most likely automatically do a pap smear. If you're not sexually active and under 18 you can request that they dont.

A pap smear is unpleasant, but not painful unless you have recently lost your virginity.

They use a metal, or plastic, device that is inserted into your vagina and clamped open a small bit. Just large enough to get a cotton swab through.

Your doctor will swab your cervix, and then leave a swab against your cervix for a few seconds to collect a sample to test for problems. The clamp is taken out after that.

That whole process is the most unpleasant and it takes maybe 2-3 minutes. Nothing major.

Next your doctor will usually insert 2 fingers into your vagina and feel the birth canal, and cervix, and press against your stomach while the fingers are inserted to check on your uterus and things like that. That part takes about another 2-3 minutes. Its not painful, just uncomfortable.

She'll also give you a breast exam, feeling for cancer or cysts. Takes her about 2 minutes.

You imagine it being frightning and awkward, but these people do this for hundreds of women every week, theyre good at what they do.

Luckily this is only once a year. :)

Welcome to womanhood.

If you are a virgin, they will place a small stick inside your vagina through the hymen openining, in order to collect some material for analysis. If you are not they will insert a plastic device into your vagina, and once it is inside, the doctor will make it expand to the sides in order to stretch the vagina so that the entrance to the womb will be made visible. The doctor then will be collecting material from there to analysis. Some doctor also make the 'touch' exam, by inserting his fingers (with gloves on).
I have had all of it and sometimes it can be really quite paintful, even the small stick that goes through your virginity, but all in all it is a pain you can handle, plus prevention is very important. There will be the breasts check up also, of course. Congratulations for going!

Since this is your first time going, they will do a thorough check up on you, give you a pap smear, check places you have not been checked before. it will be uncomfortable, but worth it. You should have a check up every year.
