Nitrogen is more stable than regular oxygen and the other guy is thinking of nitrous oxide which is very volitale. The advantage of nitrogen is 50% less blow out rating, 25-30% more tread life since it does not dry rot tires from the inside out and a slight increase in gas mileage since you can run higher tire pressures by using nitrogen, you go by the tire rating instead of the door jam. I work at a dealer and we charge $39.95 and I know bell tire usually charges $4 or $5 a tire. Nitrogen is a cool idea, it has been used in racing applications since the 70's. I put it in all 3 of my cars and I noticed too that the mpg on my daily drivers have seen an improvement.

While $50 isn't much money, and they do claim its for the life of the tire, I'm still of the opinion that Nitrogen is not needed for tires.
Yes the nitrogen will keep a tire cooler, but unless your running 180mph around a track your not going to get the tire hot enough to matter.
Also they claim that nitrogen will extend tire life, this may be true, but only for the folks who don't maintain there tires. If you are one who regularly checks your tire pressure, and keeps them inflated to the recommended pressure you wont really benefit from the nitrogen.
No nitrogen will not explode, it is an inert gas. And unlike posted below, even if you filled your tires with Nitrous Oxide (NO2) they still would not explode. Nitrous Oxide is not flammable either. It is however an oxygenator, which means if there is fire present, it will help feed that fire with Oxygen and make it burn more.
I also don't see how anyone can claim that Nitrogen increased their fuel mileage., if the tire has 32psi of air, or 32psi of nitrogen it still has the same rolling resistance. And for local commutes, the traffic situations, road conditions, and driving habits are going to control your mpg more than anything else.

Last time I got new tires I got them filled with nitrogen. Really not much of a difference from air. In no way is it worth $50 though: the real life benefits just aren't there.
