"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein taught me to think outside the box with regard to human relationships.

"The Book of Lies" by Aleister Crowley taught me to think outside the box with regard to spiritual relationships.

And the Harry Potter series taught me to believe in kids, even if I can no longer believe in their schools.

"The Giver" can't think of the author right this minute. Interesting take on life as we live it. "Lord of theFlies" for the same reason. Both have that "we are all in this together" theme, which is slightly altruistic but inspiring. "The Five People You'll Meet in Heaven" was also very intriguing, and uplifting. Ultimately, a book that makes you reflect on your own life and how you're living it and encourages to do the right things and make the most of your time here on Earth - we all need to follow our true path.

This is pretty off the wall, but I have a 1950's book called Nancy Cleans House. It's about a pre-teen whose mother is pregnant, and in preparation for her hospital stay and whatnot, she begins learning how to take care of the house. Because apparently Daddy can't pitch in and help....but I digress.

Although it's a story, it's also an instructional manual, even has diagrams of how to make a bed!

For some reason, even though it's horribly outdated and sexist, every time I read it, I feel like cleaning.

Go figure. That's my shameful secret.

To Kill a Mockingbird is my standard answer, but also the The Little Engine That Could. Everytime I read the story about that tiny blue engine to my kids, I think just how possible it is to do the things in life we dont think is possible. So much of what we can or cant accomplish is only in our mind...oh the power of positive thinking and determination!

The Red Tent, by Anita Diamont. It was well written and evocative, opening up ideas for Old Testament research I had never considered.
