In Arabic the words "al-Āriba" mean "pure origin". The nomadic Arabs of the Arabian penninsular believed they were direct descendants of Shem the son of Noah, and thus, those who call themselves Arabs, are saying they are of the pure origin of Noah's line.

I am not sure but 'rab' means God. So in the battle field when they were killing of dying they might have said Ya Rab. That trickled down to Arab.
