A lady my boyfriend works with wanted to show me something. The tag said "promise ring." (HAVE MERCY!!) I was just wondering what are the different meanings of a promise ring. I am going to get one, but my boyfriend will surprise me. So, what do they mean?

my fiancee bought me a promise about 6 months ago, and what it means is he promises to never hurt you, never break your heart, to be by your side thru thick and thin. We got into plenty of times, and I thought we were going to break up, but because of the promise ring he gave me and the promise he gave me, we are still together. He proposed to me about 2 months ago and we are getting married in July next year. Trust me when I say this, the promise ring will be worth every penny he spends, he loves you very much and you kno he do because he is making a promise to be there for you no matter what. Don't listen to those other people saying it's a pre engagment ring, take it from me, I got a promise ring and engagement ring. He loves you.

Basically a promise ring means that the guy promises to be with u and only u and eventually it will turn into an engagement ring and then a wedding ring. He promises to be faithful, caring, and understanding to you. If he breaks this promise throw the ring back in his face and go find someone better.....good luck girl!

I guess it is a ring that guys will give to their girl friends when they think she is the one. I mean to let her now that he doesn't want to lose her and that he wants her to be his. I don't believe in them, because i got one from my x bf and after he gave me that he turn into crazy freak so i just don't think a girl have to have one. I am married now and the ring i am wearing right now has more meaning than that promise ring. To make a long story short promise ring can mean many things.

Oh my goodness, I didn't realize they still did that anymore.
When I was younger, a Promise Ring was given in hopes that you would receive an engagement ring one day.
We used to get pinned.
We would receive the class ring
Then came the Pearl Ring....this was when it was getting serious.
Then the Promise Ring,
the engagement ring, and then the band. That is so sweet.

A promise ring is usually given by younger couples who can't afford a big engagement ring. It is a promise to someday propose and eventually get married. lots of high school sweathearts do this as they go thier separate ways at college time.

It's kind of a promise to be exclusive. Some see it as a pre-engagement ring, but it's not always that.

Okay, the whole "Promise-Ring" thing originated from Jessica Simpson, and her father... He gave her a "Promise-Ring" to promise him and to Represent, that she would stay a "virgin" until she married.. this was before, she married Nick Lachey... Now, if there are others out there, its for whatever promises are going around I guess.. Jessica, kept her Promise, to her father, and stayed a Virgin, until she married Nick.. I gave my daughter, one, after hearing about this, and asked her to promise me, she'd stay a "Virgin" until she married a nice Christian young-man... She loses, them, and I buy her more.. I dont think she likes wearing rings... But, she was sincere about staying a "Virgin" until she grows-up, and meets Mr.Right, for her.. And doesn't want to give her Virginity, to just anyone.. We have a very open relationship, and I believe my daughter, wants to stay "Pure" until, she's met her future husband, and even after.. Of course, being strong in her church, helps, and being a "strong-young-lady" period, helps! She's a leader, not a follower!!! Thank-God!! I think you can use a "Promise-Ring" for anything you want to.. Its a "Free-Country!!"......Smile!!!

a promise ring means different things depending on who gives it to you... from your parents it means you promise to wait for sex until marriage... from your boyfriend it might mean i promise to ask you to marry me someday...
