I am setting up broadband for the 1st time and would like to go wireless. It looks like I can do this either by USB connection or a card. I prefer the sound of a usb but is this as good as a card?

I bought a USB wireless starter kit last week for our desktop. Works great, but I wouldn't want that for a laptop because:

1. You'd have to plug it in every time you set up your laptop and want to connect to Internet. With a card it's already connected for you.

2. Because you will be connecting/disconnecting a lot with a laptop, you could break or lose a cord or the USB connector.

One drawback I heard about wireless is that when transferring from computer to computer on a network, it will be slow. Other than that, the Internet and everything is the same as a card.

I've never had any problems with the USB wireless connection on my PC (Belkin)
Though, I have to agree that the PCMCIA card would be tidier

a PCMCIA (also know as PC CARD) wireless card is the way to go. i have one from verizon that i use anywhere, anytime. It works similar to a cell phone and all you have to do is slide it in the slot of the laptop and connect... very easy. all the major cell companies have them. check it out

i'm undecided this would paintings; the instantaneous usb card probable won't paintings if that is purely plugged into the router, it desires the laptop as a "intermediary" to be waiting to interface with the community. you're able to desire to touch the producer of the cardboard to verify if it incredibly is achieveable, yet my wager isn't any. somewhat, you're able to desire to establish whichever laptop has the cardboard put in with information superhighway Connection Sharing (assuming you utilize abode windows XP), then connect with the internet from the different laptop in the process the 1st one working ICS. it incredibly is a link with extra info on ICS:

Get a PCMCIA wireless card. They are less temperamental and less obtrusive.

Here's one. It's the Netgear WG511.
