I posted this question on yahoo answers this morning and someone replied saying I must hurry off to hospital, because they knew of a similar case and they died !
I´ll explain my case again: I have an infected wisdom tooth. I´m taking antibiotics and dentist said I must finish the course before the tooth can be extracted. The appointment for that is next Tuesday, thank god! Problem is, my throat is getting worse and worse. I couldn´t sleep last night due to the pain and discomfort. And this morning I found that I couldn´t even speak! I´ve lost my voice.
About 8 hours have passed and I´ve just started with a bit of nasal congestion, headache and feeling a bit dizzy, so now I don´t know whether the sore throat is related to a possible cold coming up or to the wisdom tooth infection! Should I really rush to hospital? I´ve just made an appointment with my GP but it´s not till tomorrow 4pm. Should I really really rush to the hospital? or just wait...Many thanks...

Thank you very much everyone. As time´s gone by my symptoms have evolved into what I would describe as a common cold. I feel more relieved now that I now it´s not connected with my tooth problem. I´m just gonna stay in bed and rest. All what you´ve said has been of much help. Thank you

antibiotics attack your immune system as well as the growing infection. It weakens your immune system. So if you were already fighting a fluish bug going around (there is one going around right now) the virus (which is untouched by antibiotics) can take hold and your immune system which is already weakened cannot fight it as readily as usual.

All that said, i know from personal experience that when i have started antibiotics for other issues i have come down with a viral infection that up until that point my body was fighting off quite well and i didnt know i had it.

If in the unlikely event that your throat and nasal issues are related to your infected tooth, youwould most likely see a discoloration in the gums and mouth around your infected tooth, such as white-yellow blotches, or green or blackened streaking. In most cases you would also be running a very high fever. These things would be caused by the infection entering the tissue and blood stream around the tooth and infecting those areas.

Given the sore throat, headache, and now nasal congestion, i'd believe its some latent viral infection setting in.

if you're running a fever, or feel delusional or faint, go ahead and go to the ER. You also have the right to call your PCP's office, tell a nurse about the whole situation, and ask for advice as to whether or not you should be concerned.

Eat some yogurt, drink some OJ and rest until you decide to go to the ER or wait.

I worked for an oral surgeon for quite a while. If they gave you antiabotics then you are probably getting a cold with the infection. You can call the dentist that is going to do the extraction and they will talk with you to see if they think they are related to each other and will also give you advice on whether to go to the er or not or maybe up the dosage of meds. Call them first and tell them what is going on. Your dentist will decide if it is from the tooth.

Thank person is just being a Jackass; If you have already been to the Dentist- then you have nothing to worry about. The infected tooth most likely weaked your immune system; whether or not you have had this cold before the tooth problem or not- you will most likely get those symptoms- it's a cold; it'll pass with a week.

No your not going to Die!

There are few doctors or dentists who have time to anwer questions on this board. The description of your symptoms sound like you are getting a cold on top of your infected tooth. Go to the ER (but call your Dr. first) only if you start running a fever of 101* or more.

Do you still have your tonsils?

If so, go to the Emergency Department or to your doctor's office now.

If your THROAT is involved, you can develop and abscess in your tonsils. As it grows, it can cut off the airway.

It may just be causing drainage. Post nasal drip can make you feel like stink, but worsening symptoms should be a warning that the treatment is not working as planned.

Go. You can call the doctor on the way if you need to.

Yes, mouth infections can easily spread to the lungs or to the brain. It is very dangerous.

But don't panic just get to the hospital and I'm sure you will be fine.
