Is that actually supported somewhere, or did someone just make it up?

Although it's a nice thought, it is not contained anywhere in Holy Scripture (including the apocrypha) or in writings by the early church leaders. And while the sub text may appear to be that the innkeeper was shutting the Savior out of his life & heart, that is alos not indicated by the text. It was simply a fact that there was no room left in the inns. Bethlehem was a SMALL village, probably the normal population was around 100 people, and by Ceasar's decree, ANYONE who's lineage was traced through King David had to go there to be counted in the census. Historians estimate that this could have been upwards of 10,000 people. And in that day, people would have said things like "it's way out in Bethlehem" (instead of our modern Timbuktu) it was not a tourist attraction, or on the way to anywhere. People were literally shoulder to shoulder to find a place to stay the night.
