If you think you will be using more than one messenging program I would suggest Trillian. It combines your messenging profiles into one window instead of having multiple windows open you only have one. I use AIM, Yahoo, IRC, MSN, and have them all running in Trillian.

There are a lot of options. I use MSN at home. It doesn't really matter what IM you use. I like MSN IM for it's features and extras, but I also run AOL from time to time. It really has to do with what your friends use. At work I run Gaim which will tie in all instant messengers into one handy unit, but doesn't have all the bells and whistles the others have.

The best one to use is the same one that your friends use. If you use a different messenger from them then you'll have difficulty chatting! Other than that they are all the same thing with a different front end - it doesn't matter one iota.

Get Trillian. It's got all of them, and they're all free anyway.
