If there was material back there the possibility of it riding up is there. Then the athlete would spend a good part of the event digging out the material that rode up between his buttock cheeks.

i don't know the english word - in german you say to ride yourself a wolf! and that hurts a lot! but it only happens when you have cloth rubbing on your skin - that's why i never wear undies when doing sports...
